Captain Matthew Glass

Houston Pilots

Captain Matthew Glass has been in the maritime industry for over 20 years and is in sixth year on the Houston Pilots Executive Committee, currently as the Second Officer.  He has been an active pilot on the Houston Ship Channel for 14 years. 

 

Prior to receiving his commission as a pilot, he worked for various commercial enterprises sailing on tanker vessels that serviced ports in the East, West, and Gulf Coasts of the United States.  He graduated from Texas A&M Galveston in 2003 where in his senior year he served as Corps Commander.

 

As a member of the executive committee, he is responsible for overseeing the business and channel operations of one of the busiest pilot associations in the country.  His duties include being chair of the Navigation Rules and Safety Committee, chair of the Application Review Committee, assistant treasurer of the Houston Pilots Political Action Committee, and oversees social media strategy and implementation.  Captain Glass is also an active member of the Pilot’s 501(c)(3), Anchor Watch.  Anchor Watch has a strong focus on educating youth on the opportunities of working in the maritime field.

Ryan Malcolm

Galveston-Texas City Pilots

Captain Ryan Malcolm grew up in Galveston County and graduated from La Marque High School in 1999. He earned a Bachelor’s in Marine Transportation in 2003 from Texas A&M University at Galveston and a Master’s of Business Administration in 2012 from the University of New Orleans. His seagoing career began in 2001, working as a deckhand for G&H towing. From there he worked his way up through various companies and positions such as A/B, 3rd/2nd/1st Mate, Chief Mate, and eventually achieved the rank and sailed as Master in 2009. After 18 years of service on the water, Captain Malcom was selected as a Deputy Pilot in 2017 and commissioned as a Branch Pilot for the Galveston-Texas City Pilot’s Association in January of 2020. He currently holds a USMMC Unlimited Master’s License with a First-Class Pilot’s endorsement for the ports of Texas City and Galveston and serves as the Presiding Officer of Galveston Texas City Pilots.

Chad Burke

Economic Alliance Houston Port Region

Mr. Burke has served as President and CEO of the Economic Alliance since 2009.  The Economic Alliance is the economic development corporation for the Houston Ship Channel region; home to the nation’s largest petrochemical complex and second largest port.  The mission of the Economic Alliance is to grow the regional economy by attracting new businesses and creating an environment where existing businesses can expand.

There are over 250 members of the Economic Alliance, including 11 cities, Harris County, and the Port of Houston Authority.  Since 2008, the Economic Alliance has supported 74 successful projects that have helped create 3,756 new jobs and over $16.3 billion of capital investment to the Houston Port Region.

Chad serves on a variety of community boards and committees, including the Harris County - Houston Sports Authority, Texas Economic Development Council, and the Gulf Coast Economic Development Council. In 2019, he was recognized as one of Houston Business Journal’s Most Admired CEOs.

A graduate of Texas A & M University, Mr. Burke earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics.  He and his wife Shannon have two children, CJ who attended the US Naval Academy and served in the Navy on the US Bataan, and Jolie who graduated from Texas A&M University and is now in grad school at UT-Dallas pursuing a speech pathology degree. 

Hobbies:  Shannon is an active barrel racer and trains and boards their horses at home in La Porte, while Chad carries on the tradition his grandfather began as a honeybee keeper.
